Однак, як зазначає заступник директора Інституту Гаррімана Колумбійського університету Олександр Мотиль, «часто вважалося, що вони мало стосуються «реальної» політики в СРСР, політично вмотивовані запитами еміґрації й емоційно переобтяжені націоналістичним підходом.
